Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Assistant Vice President & Dean (Student Success) provides leadership, coordination, and management to all areas of the division's student success programs including program and staff supervision.  Areas of functional oversight include: Viking ROADS, TRIO/SSS, Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Black and Hispanic Male Initiative (BHMI), Academic Counseling and Student Success (including Accessibility Services), and Transfer & Career Services. The Dean of Student Success also provides overall functional oversight of the college's student success platform (Viking Success/Starfish) and serves as the program director for the college's Title V grant, among other grants.

The Dean of Student Success is responsible for cultivating and fostering a community that is grounded in best practices for student success, including culturally responsive pathways for student achievement, persistence, completion, transfer and career readiness. They collaborate with leadership in Enrollment Management and Student Life to enhance the student experience by designing and operationalizing an integrated and comprehensive organizational plan that meets the needs of a diverse student population. The Dean collaborates with division leadership to promote an environment of inclusion, accountability and superior customer service in support of shared goals; and maintains a focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) in all student services activities seeking to close institutional performance gaps and expand student success. The ability to work constructively and cooperatively across divisions, particularly with Academic Affairs, is paramount for success.  


Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate must possess a Master's Degree in Counseling, Education or a related field, and seven years' experience in the planning and development of training programs, personnel administration, or human development, including three years in an administrative/supervisory position.

This is a leadership position within a student-facing administrative office and is considered an on-campus role. The ability to effectively work with a team of diverse faculty, staff and students is essential for success. The successful candidate will be familiar with college software technology such as PeopleSoft, Viking Success/Starfish, Degree Works, MS Outlook, etc.

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and evidence of equity-minded practice in all college policies, practices, and personnel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: It is preferred that the successful candidate have:

  • A Master's degree in Education Administration or Student Affairs/Services.
  • The ability to demonstrate extensive breadth and depth of relevant experience appropriate to the role, particularly over the past five (5) years, with increasing responsibility at an institution of higher education.
  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English), both verbal and written.
  • An advanced knowledge of theory, research, and practice related to student success, including a demonstrated understanding of student development theory, culturally responsive and equity-minded practice.
  • An appreciation for the principles of shared governance and a demonstrated willingness to listen for understanding and communicate with tact and sensitivity with diverse constituencies.
  • Experience in the development of metrics, policies, and procedures for establishing and achieving objectives in student success and demonstrated initiative in working collaboratively and cooperatively with division and college-wide leadership to contribute to the development of student retention strategies and to providing periodic analysis of impact. 
  • A facility with assessment and data analysis to identify institutional barriers and to inform program improvement, with a related track record of leadership in areas impacting student achievement, persistence, completion, and career readiness.
  • The ability to coach and mentor staff and build unit capacity to ensure that staff and unit operations are optimally aligned with the needs of the service population. 
  • Experience in grants management, particularly federal and state grants.
  • An earned doctorate in Educational Leadership, Student Services, or a closely related field.


Additional Information:

SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $121,246. Additional compensation with seniority steps maximize at a salary of $178,921. Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, a choice of defined benefit and/or defined contribution pension plan, generous leave benefits, and access to tax sheltered annuities and a deferred compensation plan.

WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Flexibility and occasional evening/weekend hours may be required.
