Basic Function

Under direction of an administrator or manager, maintains an assigned group of classrooms, restrooms, offices, and related facilities in a clean and orderly manner.

Representative Duties

1. Performs standard and routine floor care duties including but not limited to sweeps, scrubs, mops waxes, vacuums, and steam cleans floors, rugs, and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops, and other work areas. E

2. Empties and cleans waste receptacles; sweeps sidewalks; picks up paper, trash, and debris; picks up trash s and empties into large trash bins and receptacles. E

3. Cleans and maintains restrooms including but not limited to floors, walls, fixtures, appliances, and mirrors; restocks supplies, polishes metal fixtures, and cleans drinking fountains. E

4. Washes windows, blackboards, furniture, and walls; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork. E

5. Performs simple, routine, and non-technical maintenance of equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is in proper working condition; notifies supervisor or Custodial Lead of more in depth or technical repair needs. E

6. Performs minor, routine, non-technical repairs to buildings and fixtures including replacing lights; reports other repair and maintenance needs as appropriate. E

7. Performs security duties related to buildings and grounds during assigned times; turns lights on and off; unlocks and locks doors and windows. E

8. Assists in moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment for special events and meetings; assists utility setting up canopies, tables, and chairs for events; assists utility removing old tables, chairs, and desks from classrooms and places them in surplus. E

9. Performs a variety of clerical responsibilities in support of the department’s day-to-day activities and/or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms; opens, screens, and distributes mail and corres­pondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment. E

10. Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
· District policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment.
· California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment.
· Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
· Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work.
· Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, blackboards, carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures.
· Cleaning materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in custodial work.
· Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
· Proper mixing and dilution of cleansers, disinfectants and stripping agents and disposal of chemicals after use.
· Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies
· Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
· Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in custodial work.
· Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and standards for the prevention, containment, and elimination of blood borne pathogens, viruses, and other potentially infectious materials including proper disposal of biohazard waste.
· Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
· Proper use of chemicals and techniques for floor care.
· Effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
· Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.
· Best practices and procedures on use of various office equipment.
· Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
· Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

Ability to:
· Perform the essential responsibilities of the position.
· Operate and troubleshoot floor care and custodial services machinery and tools
· Lift and move heavy objects and equipment.
· Learn the requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
· Use common cleaning equipment and materials in a safe and efficient manner.
· Use cleaning materials, equipment, and methods according to pre-determined standards.
· Learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
· Maintain tools and equipment assigned in proper working order.
· Perform minor, non-technical repairs.
· Observe and report need for maintenance and repair.
· Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
· Perform heavy manual labor.
· Operate a variety of custodial equipment including floor stripper, buffer, carpet shampooer, vacuum cleaner, power blower, and small power, and hand tools.
· Perform minor repairs as assigned.
· Plan, organize, and prioritize workload to meet schedules and timelines.
· Understand and follow oral and written directions.
· Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
· Utilize computer software programs, applications, databases, computer hardware, and peripheral equipment related to the area of assignment.
· Operate motor vehicles as needed to perform duties, observing legal and defensive driving practices.
· Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those encountered during the course of work.

Education and Experience

· High school graduation or General Educational Development (GED); AND
· Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed.
· Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

· Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.
· May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position

Distinguishable Characteristics

The Custodian is the entry-level classification in the Custodial series. The incumbent in the Custodian classification performs a variety of routine custodial/maintenance responsibilities under close supervision. The Custodian maintains the cleanliness, appearance, and safety of assigned District/college buildings and facilities. Incumbents are responsible for ensuring that cleaning assignments are completed in a timely manner. The Custodian classification work regular, day shifts.

The Custodian I is distinguished from the Custodian II – Floor Care Technician in that the latter classification is primarily responsible for performing technical responsibilities related to floor care, repair, and basic restoration of flooring surfaces throughout the District and college sites. The incumbent in the Custodian II – Floor Care Technician is assigned to work in the swing and graveyard shifts, although some exceptions may apply when needed by the District.

The Custodian is distinguished from the Custodial Lead in that the incumbent in the latter classification review and evaluate the completion of work assigned to the custodial team and assists the administrator and/or manager in special projects and oversight of the day-to-day activities and workflow of the department. The incumbent in the Custodial Lead classification performs assigned responsibilities in the graveyard shift.

Working Conditions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds; subject to frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

MENTAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; lean and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.
